Boo Candy Card by Laurie Schmidlin

One of the first things that comes to mind when I think of Halloween is candy, of course!  I thought that I would pair both of them on one card using Bella's cute new Spooktacular collection.  I created a circle shaped card, using the new Spooktacular 6 x 8 Paper Pad for the background and a circle die.  To add the sucker, I punched a hole in the top part of the card and slipped the sucker through so the end of it is tucked inside. 

I then added the ghost Paper Piece so as to look like he was holding the treat!  I embellished with some more Paper Pieces, Tabbies, and and Enamel DooDad.

Bella Blvd & Illustrated Faith With Laurie

Hi Bella fans, Laurie here to share a little giftie that I recently created! I love to have several "just because" gifts on hand, so when someone is on my heart I have a little something ready to give them to brighten their day a bit.

I created a custom canvas gift bag by painting it using the Illustrated Faith Acrylics paint (more on that below). I filled it with a long and skinny notebook, matching pen, and a dressed up gift card holder.

Even though I loved making all of this, the bag was the most fun! Isn't it great when something we picture in our minds turns out exactly as planned? 

I started with a blank canvas drawstring bag. I had this one in my stash, but they are easily found in almost every craft store. I then chose a couple of paint colors (I took my color idea from the Die Cut Prompts that I decorated the bag with). I wanted to lighten the yellow a bit, so I added some white. One thing that I wanted to point out, I slipped a piece of scrap chipboard (you could also use cardboard) inside the bag to prevent the paint from bleeding through to the other side.

Before I started painting, I watered down the paint a little. I wanted to create more of a wash effect than the opaque background the full strength paints would have given me. After the paint dried, I splattered on some white acrylic paint, softening the background even more. To adhere the Die Cut Prompts, I just used a heavy duty liquid adhesive.

Here's a closer look at the gift card holder. I'll admit that the idea for this came from this cute Die Cut Prompt (IF Pop Culture)! I dressed up the focal image with a little Enamel Heart.

You can see that the gift card easily slips in and out of the pocket I created (using a piece of the She Blooms patterned paper).

I definitely have a thing for notebooks! I love them! I chose to cover a long and skinny notebook, perfect for creating lists. For the cover, I just wrapped a piece of black cardstock around the notebook, allowing for a 1/4" spine. To decorate it, I stitched on a strip of one of the borders from the She Blooms Treasures & Text sticker sheet. I then added lots of different die cut prompts (also from the Pop Culture Die Cut Prompts) and a few more stickers from the She Blooms Treasures & Text. The cute little letters that I used to spell the "notes" sentiment with is from the Homespun Hey Sugar Sugar Alphabet sticker sheet.

National Doughnut Day With Laurie

Hi Bella fans, Laurie Schmidlin here bringing you a special holiday gift ensemble!

Did you know that today is National Doughnut Day! Yes, you read correctly! There is actually a day that celebrates those golden, baked pastries smothered in icing and sprinkles! Now that is one holiday I can totally get on board with! Ha!

I thought this special day would be the perfect opportunity to give a neighbor a "just because" gift!  I created a card, coffee K Cup holder, and a flag ... all doughnut themed!

I purchased a doughnut that I knew would coordinate with my ensemble (good thing that they make doughnuts is just about every color imaginable). To tie it in with the other items, I created a flag that sticks right into the doughnut. I used a wooden skewer, patterned papers from the Family Frenzy collection, circle punches, and a Reverse Confetti stamp that I had in my stash.

For the coffee K Cup holder, I used this template combined with some more Family Frenzy patterned papers. I decorated the front with some alphabet stickers and sentiment sticker from the Family Frenzy Treasures & Text sheet. The top doughnut image was created using a die cut and more Family Frenzy patterned paper.

There are some really cute doughnut themed papers and stickers included in the Family Frenzy collection! I used one of the Daily Details for the main focal image and then added a small strip of striped paper (from the Donut Day sheet) at the bottom. The sticker is from the Treasures & Text sheet.

Summer Reading Journals With Jamie

Summer is right around the corner. Well, here in the Rockies it might not actually feel like it. But the calendar tells me it's true. Every summer our library hosts a summer reading program with incentives for reading. It's been part of our seasonal tradition for many years now. 

This year I wanted to take it up a notch and not only help my kids participate in the reading program again, but encourage writing as well. So, of course ... they need a journal!

I wanted to make these journals fun and festive and inviting. This led me to alter some not-so-fun journals I already had. And here's what I came up with.

For this first journal I went with that awesome Art Journal paper from Star Student as the cover for the front. A bit of gesso gave foundation to some tags I cut from pattern paper and cardstock. A few stickers plus the word READ gives encouragement to use this journal to read and record thoughts on the reading.

The inside cover is also covered with pattern paper. And since I love clear pages so much, a Clear Cut page was added in as a sort of cover page.

Another addition to the inside is an envelope I made using a piece of Color Chaos Scallop Strandz. This will be perfect to hold coupons and awards from their reading program.

Tabs from Treasures & Text were perfect to create index pages and markers within the book.

I even added a flap page just for fun and interest. My youngest daughter is already excited about this new fun book. I hope it will encourage her to continue her writing during the summer and hone that skill.

Since I have a few daughters, I need more than a few books. This is version #2. As a suggestion, when creating journals and what not, go ahead and make another while all the stuff is out. Challenge yourself to a variation on a theme, like this book became. It's cover is not too dissimilar from the first book, but it also has a unique look.

The inside follows the same theme as the previous journal.

Not shown in the other book is a page dedicated to a book list.

And I have to have all my 'sticking out' parts too with some tabs.

The possibilities are endless for a hand crafted journal. It would make a great gift. A perfect book of lists. A helpful planning journal. Whatever you can think of that needs journaling, make up a few of these to give that journaling a home. And happy documenting.

{inter} National Scrapbook Day: All About Laurie

Happy {inter} National Scrapbook Day everyone! We have so much to share with you today, so we hope you'll keep popping in throughout your day. I challenged all of our designers to create an "All About Me" layout, giving us a peek into a little part of their lives. Each of them also answered five quick scrapbooking related questions. We will be sharing these layouts, hour by hour today. And with two giveaways added in, we’re bringing you 12 hours of posts! I'm going to share a secret with you. Please don't throw anything at me, ok? (((grin))) I very rarely scrapbook. Don't get me wrong, I love to see scrapbook pages! I would really like to create some of those as well! I just, well ... never do. Honestly, I prefer card making. And creating gift or home decor items. In fact, when I see a gorgeous piece of patterned paper, my mind is already putting together several cards! Since we are sharing projects that tell our story, I opted to create a home decor item filled with my favorite things. Since the process of making it qualifies as one of my favorite things, I thought that would count as well. 

I started by painting a black acrylic wash onto a wood frame. To distress it a little bit, I sanded all of the edges after it was dry. I chose all of my favorite colors to include in this frame, many of which just happen to be Bella colors! The background paper that I chose (the back side of the IF She Blooms Art Prints sheet) is my all-time favorite Bella paper. I machine stitched (another favorite thing of mine) around the focal image. Just below that, I added a sticker that pretty much sums up my all-time favorite Bible verse (Philippians 4:13).

For decoration, I hand cut some wonky circles out of coordinating patterned paper and then distressed all of their edges. I combined my handmade flowers with some of the flowers included in the She Blooms Paper Pieces. And because I can't resist a pretty butterfly, I added a wood one from my stash.

Laurie’s Q&A

1. What are your top 5 supplies/products that you cannot scrap without?

A very high quality paper cutter as straight and clean edges are very important to me. Very good adhesive (I use Scotch ATG Tape Glider for paper and Zip Dry liquid glue for embellishments). Twine or ribbon as I almost always add this to my cards. Patterned paper as I am a self-proclaimed patterned paper junkie ... especially papers like Bella's bright colorful ones! Dimensional foam as I add this to almost everything I make! I love to add dimension to my projects and achieve this by adding dimensional foam under different layers.

2. What do you listen to while you scrap? TV, music, or do you do your best work in silence?

I almost always listen to something. Lately, I have been alternating between the George Ezra (love him) station on Pandora and a Sherlock Holmes novel on Audiobook.

3. What is your favorite go-to technique or design element when creating?

That would most definitely be layering! I do change up the style of my projects, but they almost always involve layers of either cardstock, embellishments, or both!

4. When do you do your best scrapping? Are you a morning scrapper, a late night scrapper, or do you find time during the day?

I used to be a late night crafter, but ever since my last child was born I tend to do everything during the day.  He still does not sleep very well, even at 2 1/2, so I really value what little time I get at night! Ha!

5. When the creativity isn't flowing, what do you do to get back into your creative zone?

The first thing that I will do is reorganize my craft room! I love things organized and neat, and definitely work better when they are. The next thing I do is to browse some of my favorite graphic design websites. Just seeing the patterns, colors, and images that are trending in the design world usually sparks my mojo!

Focusing On Mother's Day

Mother’s Day causes me to be reflective of the amazing journey I’m on. I was thinking about the day my oldest was born and how it completely and utterly changed me and my life (for the better of course!) and the idea came to create a layout counting the days since I stared this journey of being a Mum, complete with photo of the very moment.

As this layout is from my perspective, I wanted to use supplies that reflected my style and loves and I couldn’t go past the She Blooms collection from Illustrated Faith. I swoon over those pops of bright color contrasted with classic black and white! Plus, the sentiments seemed quite fitting!

I had the idea to create a “shaker” of sorts as my background, with lots of floating hearts. I freehand cut a bunch of hearts from some patterned paper and arranged them on my background VERY randomly. To create the shaker effect, I stitched a square of the White Confetti Clear Cuts over the top.

I kept the rest of the layout quite simple, as it was already a bit busier than my usual style! A simple photo mat, a few heart embellishments with a small pop of aqua and yellow for interest.

And finally, my title. I love how playful the ‘2950’ is. I did calculate the days that had passed and in a way, it seems like it should be more!

I’m already thinking about other stories I can tell using this same ‘counting the days’ method - including marriage, friendships, hobbies and vacations. But for now, this layout will be proudly on display as we go into the Mother’s Day weekend, to remind me of how far I’ve come!

"Mom" gift bag, by Laurie Schmidlin.

Hi there! Laurie here, bringing you a couple of projects that I created for Mother’s Day! Creating special cards and/or gift packages is one of my most favorite things to do! This is exactly the reason I started card making all those years ago. Creating something unique and handmade for the special people in my life is just one of the ways that I can express how much they mean to me!

My first project is a small gift bag that I dressed up and personalized. I started with a plain, flat kraft colored bag. I knew I wanted to make some paper flowers for the front, so I die cut several different colors (I used papers from the Color Chaos collection), glued them together, and then added a coordinating enamel dot. I love that there are enamel dots to match almost every Bella color! In the case that there isn’t a matching color (like for the orange flower), just take a Milk White enamel dot and color it with an alcohol based marker (such as Copics or Spectrum Noir).

I added some stickers from both the Color Chaos and Scattered Sprinkles collection to add even more color to my gift bag. Finally, I added a die cut “Mom” sentiment to finish it off.

Up next is a card I made that can be used either for Mother’s Day, or any day really. I definitely think Moms should be celebrated year round, don’t you? I layered on some strips of paper from the Illustrated Faith Whatever Is Lovely collection. The wonderful sticker is from the Color Chaos Trinkets sticker sheet. 

The fun chipboard flower is actually is from the Simply Spring collection. I just love how almost every Bella collection is so easy to mix and match! I spelled “mom” out using letters from the Amorie Alpha collection. For embellishment, I tied on a twine bow, added a bit of coordinating Washi Tape, and a couple of Illustrated Faith Enamel Hearts.

Bella Blvd & Canvas Corp Team Up: Day Five

Welcome back to the final day of our week long special feature! Bella Blvd is teaming up with Canvas Corp for a week full of inspiration. Canvas Corp will be sharing projects from their designers, featuring our Bella Blvd products, over on their blog this week, both Monday and today. And we have a group of our Bella designers that have been incorporating their products into their projects, which we will be sharing right here, all week long.

The Seasons Mini Album, by Leanne Allinson.

One of the best things about having Team Up opportunities with other companies, is the way different products really get me to think outside the box! In my package of goodies I received a 6"x6" canvas mini album and I knew immediately that I wanted to create something fun, bright and colorful! At the same time I wanted to create a mini that has no photos and relies only on the patterned papers and embellishments I use from the Bella Blvd collections. Something that came together very easily after a visit to my youngest son's classroom.

My six year old and his classmates are studying the Seasons of the Year. They are learning to associate the traditional colors with each Season, something that can be difficult to comprehend in the sub-tropical climates of Queensland, Australia! There is not a lot of visual stimulation to distinguish the seasonal changes around here, so with my Bella Blvd collections in hand, I started to fussy cut elements from four main collections - Sweet, Sweet Spring, Summer Squeeze, Hello Autumn & Christmas Cheer. On the front cover I made certain to include elements from each season and layered the fussy cut images to create a garden scene. The rest of the pages were divided into four spaces to contain a scene for each corresponding season. You might also note that I've changed the orientation of the mini, to allow a clip at the top, to hold the pages open similar to that of a calendar rather than booklet format.

Spring and Summer have plenty of blooms adhered to the pages but there are individual elements that help distinguish each season from the other. I've added a cute bunny hidden among the flowers and enamel dots for Spring.

The bee and rainbow cluster draw your eye towards the Sweet, Sweet Spring Treasures & Text "Spring has Sprung" sticker.

I have used the same layout for Summer but included more sunshine and fruit images.

For Autumn & Winter there's a distinct change in the colors I've used. The pumpkin colored orange and navy blues of Autumn complement the frosty ice blue and purples used in the Winter scene. Once again I have used Treasures & Text sticker elements to highlight which season is on the page. To complete the winter scene, I have added Ice enamel dots directly to the canvas to help convey the idea of snow. Something many of the children in my son's class have never seen!

Each season has fussy cut images that peek out from between the pages. Hopefully the intrigue will encourage the children to turn the pages and encourage them to discuss the colors of the season with their teacher.

When I first saw this beautiful peachy/pinkish colored burlap from Canvas Corp, I immediately thought of the gorgeous colors in the She Blooms collection! I started by layering on a piece of Take Root clear cut over a black cardstock base. I then layered on a piece of the peach colored burlap that I had cut and shredded the edges a bit. I then added some coordinating She Blooms patterned paper, stickers, Paper Pieces, and Ciao Chip Icons chipboard pieces. I added a few Enamel Hearts for embellishment. I love how the black and light, pastel colors compliment each other so well!

Birthday Boy Gift Bag, by Laurie Schmidlin.

I love decorating gift bags, and the large chipboard pennants that I received from Canvas Corp was the perfect size to add to one! I started by covering the chipboard pennant with some patterned paper from the Baby Boy collection. 

I then added some of the natural burlap over the top of the pennant. You can never have too much texture! For the focal image, I adhered some Birthday Boy Paper Pieces, stickers, & Ciao Chip Icon chipboard pieces on top of the pennant. I scattered some Enamel Doodads for embellishment.

“Our Family” canvas, by Laurie Schmidlin.

I love making flowers with paper and fabric, and when I saw the olive green burlap from Canvas Corp, I was itching to create some blooms with it! I started by brushing some Modge Podge over the top of it. After it was dry, I cut out some flower shapes in varying sizes and then glued them together with some hot glue. For the canvas, I cut out a piece of Oreo Black Strandz paper (from the Color Chaos collection). For the focal image, I took one of the Blessings By Mail Praiseworthy Postcards form Illustrated Faith and die cut it using an oval die. I adhered it to the canvas, added some of the coordinating jute (also from Canvas Corp) around the edge. I then adhered the burlap flowers.

When I opened the box with products from Canvas Corp, I knew exactly which Bella Blvd collection would make the perfect project for this team-up, Sweet Sweet Spring. It was an easy choice with the fun bright yellow and green burlap that were included with the tray. I love how this project turned out. This tray is the perfect addition to my spring decor.

I absolutely love small crate and containers. I was beyond excited when I received this little crate from Canvas Corp. It's the perfect size for 4x6 cards, birthday cards and so much more. I decorated each file folder that came with the crate and made it ready to add some handmade cards. This would also make a great gift for Mother's Day!

Flashback Friday

Welcome to Flashback Friday! Sometimes we get so caught up in using our newest Bella collections that we forget about all of the older collections that we still love and can find so many uses for. We know that so many of you have these same collections in your stash as well, and thought it would be fun to "flash back" and be inspired by them once again!

“Hello Happy”, by Kat Benjamin.

I always love the “Flashback Friday” feature because it’s so much fun to dig through my Bella stash and look back on some of my old favorites. For this layout, I decided to use the “Family Forever” collection. I really like the bright, dunny colors of the collection and thought that the collection coordinated well with my photos.

Happy Easter Card & Gift Box, by Julia Akinina.

I create this Easter card and a Gift Box from the “Simply Spring” collection, because I love the color combo in this collection and I also love the cutest patterns with bunnies and eggs. I used the same paper on it, so you can give these things as a one present.

To create a box, I used my pillow box die and the sheet of paper from the collection. I took one sentiment sticker from the Simply Spring Trinkets and the other from the Little Bits and it matches perfectly! I made a quick step-by-step photo tutorial to inspire you.

It's always been fun to browse thru Pinterest, looking at the endless ideas and inspirational images that are out there. Our designers always enjoy taking whatever image we provide them, and using it in whatever way inspires them the most as they work on their projects. It's amazing to see how many different ideas and designs can be inspired by just one image.

This Pin was beautiful! I loved the color scheme and knew it would be perfect for a spring photo. I had already printed an Easter Hunt photo in black and white -- and I knew this scheme could really fit. I loved combining the pink with the orange, yellow and green. Gorgeous!

When I saw this Pinterest inspiration photo, I immediately thought of this Citrus Slice box, I used my Cameo to cut the box and then selected some paper from the Market Fresh Collection that coordinated with the color palette. This cute set would make a great gift for almost any occasion.
