Hi there! Happy Sunday! I hope today has been a day of rest and inspiration!
One of the things we love most is hearing from our tribe, and we have been hearing a lot from you lately! Lots of questions, interest, and wanting to learn! WE love that!! One of the questions we have been noticing more and more lately are questions about mixed media in your bible.
Mixed media is something you will see often in my bible journaling! I LOVE that you can create a lot of depth, interest and beautiful layers while still keeping it relatively flat in your bible. Plus, honestly? It's just fun!!!
Today I wanted to share 3 super easy tips for starting with mixed media in your bible!
1. The biggest thing is - DO NOT BE AFRAID TO PLAY! I have said it a thousand times before and I will tell you again today, don't worry about the end product, ENJOY the process! You know those back couple pages in your bible? The ones that are blank or have a couple bible features on them? This is the perfect place to experiment and see what products you may have on hand that will work in your bible. Which markers bleed? Which work well? Which paints get the page too wrinkly? Which paints sit on top of the paper? Line them all up and see what works for you! Take note, and NOW it's time to create!!!
2. Tools play a BIG part in mixed media in general, you are wanting to create texture and depth, tools will make this easier!
Two things that I use in almost every mixed media page is:
a. The bible mat (not only will this protect your pages but our latest bible mat has a cross stencil in it! 2 for 1 tools? How cool is that?!
b. The paint cards, I LOVE these for applying a very thin layer of paint (my favorite = the Illustrated Faith Acrylic Paints of course! ) but also works well for applying gesso (for those that like to add gesso to their pages) or even adding lines and texture in the paint using the side of the card! This simple tool has so many possibilities!! Some of the other tools I find myself reaching for a lot when playing with mixed media: baby wipes (seriously a must have for this messy girl!), stencils (if you have any on hand and you aren't sure what to do with them, try them in your bible!!), heat gun ( great to speed up the process) and lately I have had fun playing with the Gelli Plate - seriously have you guys played with these? So fun!!
3. Color plays a HUGE part in mixed media.
Since you are layering a lot in mixed media ( seriously, it's all about the layers folks!! ) you really want to pay attention to how colors are playing off each other. You don't want to create any muddy colors by layering colors that clash. If you are unsure about which colors look well together, trying playing with colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. If you look at my mixed media pages in general, you will see a lot of analogous colors, it really is one of my favorite ways to create! If you want to mix it up a bit find a style guide on Pinterest and use the colors from there, or better yet, find a pattern paper you have been crushing on and use the colors from the paper! There are color combos all over, pick one up and create with it!!
Some of my favorite Illustrated Faith items for mixed media include: The bible mat, arylic paints, watercolors, wordfetti, journaling pen, cross cross washi, mini hexies, date stamp, book it stamp and elements stamp set! (Available at online and local craft and Christian retailers now!)
I hope this gives you a couple tips to jump into mixed media with paint brushes in your hands and a smile on your face! Have the most fantastic day!
