Late last year the Illustrated Faith Starter Kit was released. This kit, as I shared HERE in this post, is a great way to just begin. If one is new to the Illustrated Faith approach to Bible study and journaling, this kit is just enough to not overwhelm the newbie, but also enough to help one to get started in this creative outlet.
Hey everyone…this is Jamie, and today I want to dig into one of the items that is included in the Starter Kit, the Devotional Booklet. Pray. Create. Repeat.
This devotional book is a practical guide to dipping one’s toe into the Bible journaling world. Shanna, the founder of Illustrated Faith, practically takes you by your hand and shares just how to get started. As she states on the introduction page, she is inviting the reader to discover some of her favorite ways to illustrate faith.
To begin, she invites you to pray. I don’t know anything that I start without prayer. The booklet has several prompts regarding prayer. As I was reading Shanna's words on the subject, I was reminded of
one of my favorite quotes about prayer by G.K. Chesterton:
“You say grace before meals.
All right.
But I say grace before the concert and opera,
and grace before the play and pantomime,
and grace before I open a book,
and grace before sketching, painting, swimming,
fencing, boxing, walking, playing, dancing and
grace before I dip the pen in ink.”
So I too invite you to pray before you begin this journey. Whether you are new or veteran to illustrating your faith.
While going through the Devotional Book, I simply just followed the prompts. Since this page was highlighting prayer, I then added my own prayer to the bottom of the page based on the Scriptures I was prompted to find. Then, I went to adding additional words and some sketch notes to the facing page just as a way to meditate further on the prayer passages.
The next page is not too different from the previous. There is a prompt for Prayer as well as Scripture. You can work through this book one day at a time, or read through and respond to as many pages as you like in one sitting. But take note how easily Shanna’s words lead one through the process.
As Shanna makes note on these pages, there is no right way to pray. For me, writing actual Scripture out helps to bring prayer to life. Too often I think I only ramble in prayer. To write out His Words, and then speak them back to Him in the form of a pray keeps me on track and focused on the Word. So I really appreciated this prompt.
In addition to the kit that includes 4 sheets of stickers, the Devotional Book also provides cut-aways to use either in the Devotional or your Bible. Shanna thinks of everything.
Don’t feel as though you have to follow this book in the order of the pages. If you are a rule breaker like me then feel free to jump around and respond to this book as you feel led. It's your devotional book to explore and illustrate with. Again, there are no rules. It's all about responding how YOU would respond.
The last page I will share today is a sermon prompt. I'm not going to spoil this page, but it's a good one. Just as is all the Devotional Booklet. A well written approach to illustrating faith.
I want to invite you to dive into the Starter Kit if you have not already. It’s a great way to begin your Illustrated Faith journey if you have never tried before. All the pieces are there…and the Devotional Book is a most perfect primer to make the journey a good one.
