Bella Blvd & Illustrated Faith: Finding Your Comfort Zone

HI there! I am so excited to be back on the Bella Blog, you guys are the best! 

One of the things I want to do with my posts here is to address some of the questions I get over and over again. Let's face it when starting something new it can often be scary and that often times can lead to us putting up barriers that prevent us from even starting in the first place. 

Today I wanted to talk about the different levels of entry into this process. People will often say " I love what you are doing but I don't have a creative bone in my body"  or "I love what you are doing but I don't have time"  - The truth is this is really what you make of it. To really show that you can take as much time or as little time as you would like with this I wanted to show three examples of the  same entry in my bible. 

I am working in the Genesis Devotional where I share (maybe a little too much) about my testimony and how we came up with the products that are offered in the kit. I started on the first devotional which focuses on grace. 

This is an example of a very simple entry. I have my bible open to the verse (Ephesians 4:7) and have put down a bit of paint (making sure to use my bible mat!!!) and my title "AMAZING GRACE" with letter stickers and some very simple journaling OH! And a date. That is REALLY all you need to do this. Get your thoughts down on paper, document what God is putting on your heart. This took me less than 5 mins. - and let's face it anyone can do this, but it keeps it simple and it gets it done! The ONE thing I regret is that I didn't start sooner, so give it a try, I promise you won't regret it!

The second image is for those that want to take it a step further. I have outlined the letters to help them pop off the page using the Illustrated Faith pen and have doodled some lines on the white alpha. Then I added a bit of paint over the text and underlined where I have been working. This doesn't take a lot more time, but really makes a big difference in the final results. 

This is my typical style- one that I love but not for everyone! I love adding the extra little details, for me it's just fun. I have added some washi, fun painted print marks and stickers.....all that being said this one isn't any better than the first one, really in all three I have the same amount of journaling about what God has put on my heart. The rest is just really about how creative you want to get with the process. 

I hope this encourages you to just get started and be open to the process. Don't look around our community and compare yourself, or think " I can't do it like her, so I am not going to start" because honestly itt shouldn't look like mine, yours should be unique to your gifts talented and thoughts that God has give YOU uniquely YOU!

International Christian Retail Show: Set Up

It's a big deal! We're in uncharted territory.....a new show for us....a new market. Hello from the very, very hot and humid land of Mickey Mouse, aka Orlando, Florida! We are here exhibiting at the International Christian Retail Show. We are here with the wonderful and cheerful pioneer of Bible Journaling herself, Shanna Noel, debuting The Genesis Collection of products geared for the Bible Journaling community. 

It's our first time, and we can't wait to educate and inspire how God is using Shanna Noel of Illustrated Faith and Bella Blvd to get people excited about their Bibles again. We feel strongly that this leap of faith is what is His plan for Bella Blvd's story and are humbled for this chapter to begin. If you're here in Orlando, please stop by and visit Booth #828--there's so much going on you won't want to miss it!

For the past 2 days we've been setting up the booth, in the hot, hot, non-air conditioning convention center exhibit hall. We're so excited the air will be running soon! Here's our rather sad looking booth upon arrival:

Slowly we unpack all our materials, the walls go up one and by one and the details start coming together. The line has been months in the making and is truly coming full circle. Myself and the team have been quite emotional over it all coming together, as this passion project means so much to each of us involved.

We hope to share and inspire people to use Journaling Bibles with 2" margins to use their God-given artistic gifts to Illustrate their faith, creating keepsake Bibles that are loved and prayed over and have stories and sentimental value for years to come. The online community has responded so well and we just couldn't be more excited to be here sharing this along with our new brand of Illustrated Faith products to the retail world!

It's pretty exciting to hear stories, and see the excitement on people's faces when they look at their Bible in a new way, a more creative way! Have you joined the conversation online? Fabric Style

 

Today we are switching things up, and instead of featuring projects using our paper collections, we are sharing projects created with our fabric collections!

Camera Pillow, by Nichol Majouirk.

As much as I love piecing big quilts sometimes I need a smaller project and my favorite is pillow covers! I love that with a new pillow cover you can completely change the look of a room. My way of sewing pillow covers has evolved over the years and my current method is by far my favorite for a few reasons. 

First, all my pillow covers are removable. I have kids and a dog and they need washed periodically plus I like to switch them out and a removable pillow cover makes it easy to do that. However, I personally don’t like envelope backs for my pillows even though they are the easiest to sew. I think they make the pillows lose their shape and just don’t look as nice over time.

All of my pillow covers have zippers. I tried the invisible zipper thing many, many times and sometimes it looked okay and most of the time it didn’t. I can’t seem to master that technique! I came across THIS tutorial for adding zippers under a hidden flap on the back of pillow covers and it changed my whole pillow making process. All my pillow covers are sewn this way now and I’ve never been happier. The pillow forms come out and go in so easy, the pillows have nice shape due to a zipper closure and they look nice and finished with that hidden zipper panel!

Second, I always, always add lining to the backing fabric (and sometimes the front if I’m not quilting the front). It’s an extra step and it takes a bit longer to get to the pillow cover sewing, but it’s so worth the extra effort! I follow the steps in THIS tutorial here and this makes the pillow cover mush sturdier and it holds up better over time.

Third, my pillow covers are all exactly the size of the pillow form I’m using or 1/2” bigger. For example, my pillow form for the camera pillow cover was 20” square and I cut my backing and quilted front to 20 1/2” square. This will give you a firm and full pillow. If you like your pillow covers to fit a bit looser, you might want to go up 3/4” to 1” bigger than the pillow form you’re using.

For my pillow today, I was inspired by the Riley Blake Bella Blvd Snapshots Camera Multi fabric to create this pillow form for my teen daughter’s room (her room is done in aqua/black/white). I backed my pillow cover with the camera fabric but for the front I used THIS awesome free download from Fat Quarter Shop, part of their Snapshots Quilt Along. The download is free however the quilt along benefits St. Jude and if you can, they ask that you donate to St. Jude for each download. I give $5 for each of the designs I download. It’s for a great cause! The camera block is part of the quilt backing design but by adding just a couple of simple borders you can make it into a pillow so easily! I’ve included a sketch of how I made my pillow and the sizes of the borders.

I combined lots of Riley Blake Bella Blvd Fabric scraps from my stash to piece together the camera and Instead of solid white for all the background I used my favorite, favoritest Snapshots Family Gray. I love the white background with gray doodles. It’s almost embarrassing how much yardage I have of this print! I quilted the front with a diagonal grid straight line quilting and used that great Snapshots Camera Multi fabric for the back.

American Girl Doll Dress, byChristine Ousley.

Doll clothes have been around for centuries and the trend continues today. American Girl dolls are very popular right now with girls of all ages. I’ve always had fun making clothes for them.

Sometimes it’s an original dress or sometimes it is a miniature version of a big girl dress so that they can match.

I love using Bella Blvd fabric when I am making them. These adorable prints in the Snapshots collection are so fun and sweet. I just love the little hearts.

A bright pink sash completes the outfit. Now, wouldn’t your little girl love to dress her doll in “Bella Blvd” style? It certainly would make a fun scrapbook page too!

Bella Blvd, Craftwell, and Tombow Team Up: Day Five

Welcome back to the last day of our team up! Bella Blvd is teaming up with Craftwell and Tombow for a week full of inspiration. Several of our Creative Team members were send the eBrush tool from Craftwell and markers from Tombow to incorporate into their projects. We've been sharing their creations right here, all week long, and we're finishing off the week with projects from Stephanie Buice. 

“Boy Crush”, by Stephanie Buice.

First off I just want to say that I had so much fun making this layout! I knew I wanted to do some sort of grid layout and while we were are the park with my son I saw this huge tic tac toe game and It hit me…a tic tac toe grid! So I can officially say that I was inspired by playground equipment ha! So as soon as I got that part down the rest came together pretty quickly.

I cut my “XOX” out with the Silhouette then used the eBrush to add the color. The Tombow Brush Markers are awesome in it and I really like how vibrant the colors are. I did learn a little trick along the way after it was quite apparent that I am by far not an airbrush artist (gasp I know right!?).

I wasn’t getting the results I was wanting with just the sprayed marker ink, so I spritzed it a bit with water and the colors came to life. Perfect! So after I sprayed my letters, I used some patterned paper to make my grid then added on my title, pictures and the rest of my embellishments.

The last thing I usually add to my layouts is the journaling so I typed that up and sewed it on. Overall I think that the Craftwell eBrush give a unique look and texture to projects that I haven’t thought to add before, pretty nifty for such a small tool!

"The Dreams of the Little Are Never Small”, by Stephanie Buice.

My husband took this picture of my son not too long ago while they were running at a track. He noticed that Brady was frozen by the fence looking at the buses and fire trucks that were parked in the lot behind them, so he snapped this one real quickly. If you know my son you know that anything with two wheels is his thing; planes, trains and automobiles for this one, and he’s got it bad. This picture really touched me and made me think about how big his dreams are for somebody so small. And I love that. There is just something about growing up that seems to make our dreams shrink, but I pray that it never happens to him. Dream amazing dreams honey.

For this layout I wanted a long title that would take up lots of my page. So, I decided that the best way to be able to do this and mix in some of the airbrushed markers with pattern paper would be to cut it out with the silhouette.

Once my title was cut I lightly traced where the tops and bottoms of each letter would be on another piece of cardstock underneath. Then I sprayed the markers along each space so the colors would show through the top layer of paper. Once that was dry I added in my strips of pattern paper underneath the rest of the words.

I cut and layered stars on top of my focal point triangle then added my journaling underneath my picture to finish it off. I splattered a bit of ink here and there as the finishing touch.

Today we have designer Laurie Schmidlin sharing cards with us, as well as showing a few ways to use the eBrush and markers on our favorite Bella embellishments.

I have always loved Bella's crochet hearts, and often add them to many of my projects. After playing with the eBrush system for a while, I wanted to try using it to add some custom color to the crochet hearts that I love so much! I started by adding some Color Chaos patterned paper and vellum for the background. I chose one of the Just Write Journaling stickers for the focal image. I used three Tombow markers combined with the eBrush machine to custom color a white crochet heart.

“Follow Your Heart” card, by Laurie Schmidlin.

I really love the different looks that I can achieve using the eBrush system. By focusing the color more, the effect is more of a solid color. By holding the pen out more, the effect is more splatter looking. I happen to absolutely love the splatter look and decided to use that look here on this card. I chose two Tombow markers to create a "sky" and "grass" look. I embellished the card with stickers from the Just Add Color collection.

“Rainbow Hello” card, by Laurie Schmidlin.

I think my favorite way to use the eBrush system so far, is to create backgrounds using stencils! Not only did it take me only minutes to create this colorful background, but I think the finished look is just gorgeous! I embellished the card using stickers and ciao chip chipboard pieces. I attached the embellishments using Tombow adhesive dots.

“Star Student” card, by Laurie Schmidlin.

To create the background on this card, I started with a piece of Passcode patterned paper (from the Star Student Collection). I sprayed on some color using the eBrush system along with a combination of Tombow and Spectrum Noir markers. I embellished with some coordinating Star Student stickers and ciao chip chipboard pieces. I attached them with Tombow ddhesive dots.

When I first received my eBrush system, I started to think about all of the fun things I could use it on! I immediately thought of all of the Bella Blvd embellishments that could be custom colored! I started with a Cotton Candy Bella Feather, two of the pink Tombow markers (included in the Tombow Brights set), and the eBrush system. I started by spraying the lighter pink marker, making sure to leave some of the original pink color on top. I then added in the darker pink color towards the bottom, creating an ombre effect. Even though the Tombow markers are water based, they worked well to color the Feathers!

After the pink Feather, I wanted to try making a blue ombre one. I started with a white Bella feather, a couple of Copic markers, and the eBrush system. Much like the pink feather, I started with the lighter color, making sure to leave some white on top. I then added in the darker blue towards the bottom. I found it helpful to add a bit of temporary adhesive underneath the feather so it didn't blow away while airbrushing it.

The next embellishment I dyed using the eBrush system is some of the Bella Blvd enamel dots! I used a large white enamel dot, a blue Spectrum Noir marker, and the eBrush system. You do need to use a permanent, alcohol based marker for this as the water based markers would not stick to the shiny surface of the enamel dot.

Another of the embellishments that I dyed using the eBrush tool is the crochet heart! The crochet hearts already come in so many pretty colors, so to compliment that, I decided to give it an ombre look like I did with the feathers. I found that both the Tombow markers and alcohol markers worked well for this. For these, I started with a bell pepper crochet heart and a gulf crochet heart.

On this layout I used the eBrush in a couple of different ways. I added some color to my background paper and then I used the eBrush and markers to add some color to flowers on the "Star Struck" patterned paper. I then fussy cut the flowers and used them as embellishments. I created a process video when I created this layout. I hope you enjoy it!

“Five Kids”, by Becki Adams.

Using the eBrush is a FUN and addictive way to "just add color" to the Just Add Color collection! I found myself wanting to airbrush all sorts of things. On this layout I added color to my background using lots of different colors. I wanted a fun spray paint look on my background paper. I created a process video when I created this layout. As soon as I started playing with the eBrush System, I knew I wanted to try something with rainbow colors. To create my background, I masked off my card to create 7/8 strips and applied the color using the eBrush. I trimmed rectangles and applied the alpha to create the "sentiment" and popped those up with foam dots.

“Hello” card, by Corri Garza.

This card was inspired by the paint splatters from the Color Chaos Collection. I used my Cameo to die cut the "hello" phrase from white cardstock. I used the eBrush to add color to the panel and then backed it with black cardstock.

Sweet Canvas Bag, by Corri Garza.

To create this cute canvas gift bag, I cut a cupcake stencil with my Cameo and then airbrushed it onto the bag. I added some enamel dots "sprinkles", some DooDads and a sticker. This would be a cute way to give a gift card or small gift.

Hey everyone, it's Jennifer Chapin here. Welcome to our week long team up with Craftwell! Craftwell was kind enough to send us the eBrush system, as well as some Tombow adhesive and brush markers. I had so much fun playing with everything, and Bella's Just Add Color products are perfect to use with it!

The machine is super easy to set up. Just take it out of the box, connect the hose and plug it in. It comes with a few different sized adapters so that you can use any marker with it. All you have to do is connect the adapter and push your marker in. Super quick! After that, just turn it on and spray.

For my first layout, I used a sheet of patterned paper from the Just Add Color collection and did a rainbow pattern down the page using different markers.

After that, I die cut a large heart from a sheet of white cardstock and adhered over the sprayed pattern. I stitched around the heart with my sewing machine and started adding embellishments to my page. 

I also used the markers to color in part of the title! Super fun to make, and Bella's chipboard coordinated perfectly to complete the layout.

“Summer Love”, by Jennifer Chapin.

For my second page, I used the markers with the eBrush to color some white Bella chipboard alphas for my title.

The letters took the marker perfectly as they are a matte finish. I also used a rainbow theme for these, using a different color of marker for each letter.

I also thought the Clear Cuts confetti transparencies would pair perfect with the colorful title and photo. I layered several different colors for a varied effect. After adding some chipboard and journaling, this simple layout was complete!

Show & Tell Saturday: Scraproom Tour

I think everyone enjoys getting to peek into other designer’s scraprooms, right? It's fun to see how others store and organize the same types of products and tools that so many of us have. And while many of us have totally different ways of setting up our spaces, or have totally different types of spaces that we're working with, you never know when you'll see a new way of storing or organizing products that you can incorporate into your own space.

Scraproom Tour, byKristine Davidson.

Hello Everyone! It's Kristine Davidson here today and I'll be sharing a peek into my scrapbook space with you! I recently just finished painting a new colour - it was a honeydew green prior to this and I love this new fresh look. I still have a few shelves to place but overall my space is ready and it's been awesome to play in.

I am lucky to call a spare bedroom my scrapbook room. I love to sit and stare at the walls, sometimes be creative, and on occasion just sit at my computer and play online. 

This is the entry to my room. It's in the north side of the house and often doesn't get much sunlight. It's frustrating at times because it's dark in there but I have extra lights that help. I usually don't scrapbook during the day so most times it's not an issue. I don't have curtains yet but I do enjoy that extra light thru the blinds. 

I keep most of my stuff in the wide shelving units from Michaels. The corner desktop on the left was a freebie my husband found online for me. I love it. It's huge! I have pegboards on both sides of my room to keep my scrap supplies. I use to spend a fortune on scrapbook supplies but in the past year or so that has stopped. I'm thankful to be on a few design teams that stock my shelves ;-) 

This next photo is of my computer desk and a place where I have my layouts displayed. I changed them around so often of my favorites for the current month. 

Yes, I love my pegboards and especially painted pink! Love It ;-) It used to be white but with my room update I painted it Bubble Gum Pink. It holds tons of stuff. It is 8 feet wide by 4 feet high. I have tons of products organized on it and I'll eventually add a shelf at the top for some extra storage. I have 2 extra OTT lights here, a sewing machine, and a few pieces of my painted pottery.

I keep my pattern papers in large Ziplock bags. I keep them organized by collection and manufacturer. I also have organizers with the company name on the front - you can see this on the left side of my desk. I don't have lots of pattern papers - it drives me crazy just having stuff sit there not being used. 

Here are a few close up pics of my scrapbook room. An old typewriter I got at an antique store in our town. It cost me $10! It needs ribbon but still works. I have these fake flowers that I love - they are colorful and I've had them for years. The Cats love chewing on them as well! LOL. 

I have a board that I keep some cute pictures, concert tickets, and signed picture of Rupert from Survivor that I met at CHA last winter. 

I keep my washi tape in a small bin, I really just use them for decoration ;-)

This is a shelf I picked up at Michaels for about $30. It was on clearance. I love that it holds extra inks, paint, wood veneers, and a few pieces I love for inspiration.

This is how I store my Bella Blvd products. Aren't they cute all lined up and on pink pegboard? I have issues with things being straight and organized, I literally change this every week. I love playing "store!"

I love little corners of inspiration. This is where I keep some paint brushes, a canvas I painting, little wood embellishments and my die-cut machine.

This week, we asked our designers to focus on the new Campout collection when creating their projects. We know so many of you have already added this fun collection to your stash, and with summer in full swing, it's the perfect time to load you up with even more ideas to incorporate this collection into your projects. My father sent this photo when the kids were there visiting. My 8 and 5 year old love to take a hike in the forest very close by and have a little picnic and my father snapped this photo and I wanted to add as much forest colors with my background and with the chosen papers from the Campout collection. All the colors in my background have been added by dropping different type of liquid paint or mist with a brush. I mixed several of the colors myself to get as many different tones a possible. Don't be afraid to mix a lot of colors when you scrap.

The Campout collection is so cute with adorable images but designs and text that are perfect for a variety of uses. I wasn't sure how I could use some of the really cute traditional camping elements, since we aren't outdoorsy and we don't camp. Then, my son went on a school science camp and I knew that this was going to be a perfect pair!
