Altered Projects

It's always fun to see what kinds of projects our Altered Project Designers come up with each month. I love when they think outside the box, taking something we might not automatically think of as being a creative "canvas", and making something really cool with it.

Wine Bottle Tags, by Jennifer Edwardson.

I always like to take flowers and/or wine when we visit friends and usually end up just taking the bottle. I've seen different versions of cute wine tags here and there so I decided to try my own with some Bella Blvd products.

I cut each base piece of patterned paper to 3 1/2 x 8" and punched a 2" circle in the top to fit over the neck of the bottle. I rounded the corners on a couple and not on the others but sanded the edges of them all before I started embellishing.

Mixing the Engaged At Last and Love and Marriage was perfect for these fun tags.  he journal cards made a great start on a couple and adding in cute cuts, borders, stickers, feathers and a button too really pulled them together!

 

These were super fun and easy to put together for literally any occasion. My wine will never be 'naked' again :)

Vacation Mini Album, by Jennifer Edwardson.

If you're like me you have a friend (or five) that do not scrapbook in the slightest BUT love the look of it all. I wanted to create something for a friends recent vacation that wasn't too time consuming but was the perfect little keepsake for a few of their favorite photos of the trip. 

To create the mini album (finished size 4 x 5 1/2") I cut (2) pieces of patterned paper to 5 1/2 x 12" and scored them at every 4". I sanded the edges of the side that I wanted to be my base and then overlapped one 'page' and adhere together using a strong quick dry glue.

To finish the album I embellished each page as though it was its own mini layout making sure to leave space for photos and dates. The back of each page is also blank to add more photos it they like!

The 'envelope' measures 4 1/2 x 6" and was cut using my Silhouette. I used kraft cardstock for the base and embellished it with a border strip, cute cuts and alphas. To close it at the back I punched out 1" circles from patterned paper and adhered them to the envelope using button shaped brads. I added some colored twine to tie it closed. Throw in an adhesive runner and it's good to go!

Altered Bird Project, by Wendy Antenucci.

I found a paper mache bird at Michael's awhile back while strolling through the dollar section and while it looked really neat, I figured a little color would make it even better! I papered my bird in small bits of colors I love and then embellished the nest and bird with some feathers. My son already claimed the "duck" as that is his favorite animal right now!

Cards On Thursdays

We have a great mix of cards to share with you today from our card designers.

“Thinking Of You” card, by Carina Lindholm.

The new feathers are so gorgeous and fun. So when I sat down to make this card I wanted to use one of the feathers and make it the focal point on the card. I choose a hot pink feather and decorated the feather with a few white pearls to add some elegance. And for my sentiment I used a stamp from the sand & surf stamp set.

“You Are Sweet” card, by Carina Lindholm.

When making this card I stared off by die cutting a bunch of scallop borders in white cardstock and in pink patterned paper. I adhered all the borders under the heart sticker. I tied some string around and adhered a green crochet heart. I love how well the green heart goes with all the pink and blues on the card.

“Sweet On You” card, by Laurie Schmidlin.

The Kiss Me Collection is still one of my favorite collections! For my card, I created a cupcake shaped card. I used a couple different patterned papers, a sticker from the Alpha+Bits page, Designer Tape, and a Hot Pink Flower. To create the sentiment, I used a stamp from the Kiss Me stamp set and stamped it using brown ink.

“All American” card, by Laurie Schmidlin.

With the last day of school and summer break starting, I just had to break out the All American collection! I combined a couple of the patterned papers with some Ciao Chip pieces, a feather, a Flag, and a Star Button. The sentiment is some stickers from the Alpha+Bits page.

“Peace. Love. Freedom” card, by Kathy Martin.

July fourth is just around the corner. I can feel it when I’m outside with temperatures and humidity on the rise. I’m starting to crave juicy watermelon, picnics, BBQ’s, and looking forward to fireworks! I also love ducking into my air conditioned craft room on a hot afternoon to do a bit of crafting with the Stars and Stripes collection!

“Congrats” card, by Kathy Martin.

Often times I like to create something different with themed lines to show their versatility. I think the Bella Blvd. Love and Marriage collection along with the crochet hearts and flowers work perfectly for a springtime cards. You can easily change the ‘Congrats’ flag sentiment for an Easter or Mother’s Day phrase. Or how about anniversary?

"Birthday Girl” card, by Wendy Wagner.

I thought it was time to create some more birthday cards, and I love the Bella Blvd birthday collections. The birthday girl card was simple but fun with the new Feathers. LOVE THEM! I chalked in the edges and added some stickles and used lots of pop dots! Kept it simple and let the wonderful pattern papers do their work!

“Amazing Birthday” card, by Wendy Wagner.

The Birthday card was made with the Birthday Boy collection. I feel the card is universal and could go to any gender! That is what I love about Stephanie's collections that she creates for Bella Blvd. They’re so versatile.

“Just Be You”, by Diane Payne.

The All American Collection is not only great for Independence Day celebrations but works great for boy pages too. I decided to use the collection with a favorite photo of my son. I utilized the white space on the right side of the photo for my design elements, title and journaling. I kept the journaling simple and just listed some of his wonderful traits using a Slick Writer pen for photos. The 100% American sticker from the Alpha+Bits sheets was a great beginning for my sub-title, 100% American Boy.

"Wish", by Megan Klauer.

The Alpha+Bits Stickers and the Just Write Journaling Stickers are two of my favorite embellishments offered by Bella Blvd. I used a variety of the stickers from all three of the new collections to pull together my "wish" layout. They are perfect for layering as well as popping off the page with pop dots.

“So Many Of My Smiles Begin With You”, by Gina Lideros.

This picture always make me smile. My good friend always brings her daughter with her when she comes to visit. Even though she is a few years younger than my daughter, they always enjoy each other’s company. I kept the embellishments simple on this layout so that the main focus could be on the photo. To make the designer tape flower I pleated gray chevron designer tape around a die cut circle and topped it off with a wood button. I love the look.

Bella Blvd Fabric Style: No-Sew Silhouette Fabric Applique Tutorial

Silhouette send some of their new Sewable Interfacing and a Fabric Blade to one of our Fabric Designers, Tiffany Hood, so she could have some fun creating with them. Tiffany created this adorable no-sew shirt for her little girl and she even put together a step-by-step tutorial for all of us to see exactly how easy it was to do!

I was super excited to try out the Silhouette Fabric Blade and Sewable Interfacing, and I was so excited with the results. The Silhouette blade cuts through fabric perfectly! And the details you get are the same details you get when you cut layered designs with paper!

 

For this project I used the “Sunny Happy Skies” and “Puppy Park” fabric lines by Bella Blvd. I used a cut from Miss Kate’s Cuttables called “Polka Dot Flowers” that I thought would be so cute on a little outfit for my daughter. When using fabric, be sure to soak it in water and dry it first to pre-shrink it before sewing anything that might be washed again later on.

I started by importing the image into Silhouette Studio and sizing the entire thing so that the largest background cut would be about 5 inches wide.

Then I “Ungrouped” the image and separated it, grouping each cut into color.  That way I can put several individual colors of fabric on the mat at a time and cut them all at once.

I trimmed each color of fabric to fit the section it would go on on my mat, and then I placed them all onto Silhouette’s Sewable Interfacing with the back of the fabric facing the glue side of the interfacing sheet.

Iron the fabric pieces onto the interfacing with the back of the fabric facing the sticky side of the interfacing. The purpose of the interfacing is to make the fabric stiff and cuttable. Without interfacing the fabric won’t cut, it will slide around the mat.

You can then cut apart each square using regular paper scissors. You’ll want to remove the paper backing from the interfacing before placing the fabric pieces onto your mat. I forgot to do this and everything still cut great but it took a while to peel the backing pieces off my mat afterward. And it probably dulled my fabric blade a little.

Place all fabric pieces onto the mat where the corresponding cuts will be. Showing the grid on your software makes this an easy process, and the Silhouette is very precise.  

Change your cut settings in Silhouette Studio to “Fabric with Interfacing.” Notice it recommends a blade depth of “3.”

Replace your blade with the Fabric Blade. A blade that has cut paper will not be sharp enough to cut cleanly through fabric. Adjust the blade to “3.”

Then cut!

To adhere without sewing, I used “Steam A Seam” which you can buy in a package at Hobby Lobby.  You can also use “Wonder Under” the same way.

Place the Steam A Seam on your cutting mat and cut all shapes again.

I lowered my speed to 2, blade depth of 3, and used my paper blade instead of my fabric blade.

Then, to bond, place your base piece down first (this picture has two already fused).

Then, place your cut piece of Steam A Seam that correlates with your next piece on top of the bottom layer.

Remove the paper backing.

Place your next layer on top (should be the same size as the Steam A Seam).

Then press with a hot iron. Make sure you are doing the right layer in the right order. This is not like adhering paper. The Steam A Seam is permanent once ironed and cannot be removed.

Repeat with all layers.

And your cut is complete! Add the Steam A Seam to the back and iron onto the front of the shirt after first washing and drying the shirt to make it shrink.

Fabric Summer Skirt and Headband, by Tiffany Hood.

After I made the cute shirt with the Silhouette Fabric products, I wanted to make a complete matching outfit. I whipped up a fun summer skirt, layered in Bella Blvd's Sunny Happy Skies fabrics and trimmed with a black pattern from the Puppy Park fabric line. And every little girl's outfit needs a matching hair piece, so I made her a headband that ties in the back, and is embellished with Bella Blvd's darling Crochet Hearts and Crochet Flowers.

“I Love You, The End”, by Jodi Wilton.

I have been waiting for the perfect Wedding Collection to go with my wedding photos, and yes it has been 10 years of waiting! This is a to-die for wedding collection, and am going to be using every last piece of it to complete my wedding album! For this layout, I wanted to mix the subtle colors with a hit of black. I also wanted to add a yellow flower, because sunflowers were the main flower on my wedding day. I decided to group the four crocheted hearts together to form a flower and then added the scalloped crochet heart in the middle for the perfect, fun, finishing touch.

I absolutely fell in love with this collection! When we bought this old house we knew we wanted to hang a flag on the front porch because of it's location on the main street in the historic district of town. We got our flag a few days before Memorial Day and we proudly displayed it throughout the summer months and especially during the parades and holidays!

“Do Not Disturb”, by Juliana Michaels.

When I began to create this layout I decided that I wanted to step outside my comfort zone a little and try to use only scraps or small pieces of patterned paper. I tend to prefer larger pieces when creating my layouts. I cut the patterned papers into strips and then tore the tops and bottom edges off of them. I then layered them and adhered them to my background paper. I completed the layout by adding some Cardstock Stickers, Designer Tape, and a Crochet Heart.

For my card I combined two stamped flowers, a stamped sentiment, Ciao Chip Icons, Journaling Sticker, and a Sand & Surf patterned paper. I just adore the bright and sunny colors in this collection! For embellishment, I added some ribbon and three Button Market buttons.

“Friends” card, by Kathy Martin.

I love creating with Bella Blvd collections! They’re always colorful and happy and perfect for projects like this card for a special friend. To show off many of the beautiful coordinating patterned papers in this line I made die cut tags and layered them with foam mounting tape in between.

“Mr & Mrs” card, by Kathy Martin.

I love the whimsical images Stephanie creates for Bella Blvd. and think they make awesome rubber stamps! The latest release of Bella Blvd. stamps is so fun and offers so many project options! For my card I used one of my favorite stamps in the Love and Marriage collection, the adorable wedding dress. First I stamped it on card stock and then on patterned paper, cut it out and layered it with foam mounting tape to create dimension.

“He & She” card, by Carina Lindholm.

I used this adorable “He & she” stamp from the “Kiss me” collection on this card. I stamped my image on a blue cloud paper, cut it out and used it as a centre pieces for my flower. I also punched out a bunch of tiny hearts in pink/dotted designers tape. I used the hearts to decorate the top part of my card.

I used a stamp from the "Kiss Me" set as the sentiment for this card. And it doubled as the center of the flower! I stamped the sentiment first onto a sheet of white cardstock. Then I used a circle punch to punch it out. I adhered it to the center of the flower with foam adhesive for some fun dimension. Thanks for looking!

"So Glad We Are Friends" tags, by Gretchen McElveen.

I have some little goodies I need to give to a couple of friends so I made tags to help decorate the gift bags. I used the "So glad we are friends" stamp from the Sand & Surf stamps as sentiments for these tags. On the red tag, I stamped directly onto the tag (oh how that scares me!). On the blue tag I first stamped the sentiment onto white cardstock. Then I cut the sentiment out and made it look like a small tag hanging from the ribbon. Thanks for looking!

“My Loves”, by Shellye McDaniel.

To begin my layout I started with strips of various Designer Tapes to create a background/photo mat. I then thought that the Ice Stripe Designer Tape would make a cute set of clouds. I applied the tape to paper and then stamped with black Staz On ink. When you're stamping onto a slick surface, be sure not to wiggle or walk the stamp back and forth as you may get a smudged look; instead stamp directly down and then back up. For the border of hearts, I only stamped the image a quarter, a third or half-way to create a staggered look. I used Color Box's Squash ink for this and it matches the Orange Crochet Hearts perfectly!

I recently ran across a cute idea using binder clips to hold place-setting cards...I wondered how well it would work as a photo display! 

I set out by adhering three large binder clips together by wrapping with a piece of patterned paper. Next, I made a 4x6 photo mat and backed it with a thin chipboard for extra sturdiness. After decorating the photo mat, just insert the frame into the binder clip prongs and it's ready for displaying. 

For the stamped clouds, I used Bordering Blue ink by Stampin' Up! and plain white cardstock by American Crafts. After stamping the image three times, I used a blue watercolor pencil by Faber Castell. 

Color in the bottom of the clouds only. Next, use a blending tool or paint brush and (starting at the bottom) begin blending in the watercolor pencil. 

To make the banner, I took a length of Designer Tape and applied it to a scratch piece of paper and then cut out. I then stamped the sentiment onto it with a black Staz-On ink; this works well and doesn't smudge!

Bella Blvd & Hampton Art Blog Hop: Day One

For the next four days, Bella Blvd is teaming up with Hampton Art Stamps to provide you with some stamping inspiration. Our newest cling stamps (Love and Marriage, Sand & Surf, and Kiss Me) are licensed and manufactured thru Hampton Art Stamps. We thought it was only fitting for a handful of our designers to team up with a handful of their designers, and see what they could all create using Bella’s products and the Bella/Hampton Art stamps.

One of my favorite stamping techniques is paper piecing (stamping onto patterned paper and cutting it out). For my card, I stamped the heart (from the Love And Marriage Cling Stamp set) onto five different Love And Marriage patterned papers, cut them out, and then stitched them all together. I added a sticker border, Ciao Chip piece, Button Market button, and a stamped sentiment to complete the card.

“Congratulations” card, by Carina Lindholm.

When I usually make cards I use lots and lots of colors on them, so I thought it would be fun to do the opposite for once. I stamped all the wedding images in black ink on grey heart paper. I cut out all the images and adhered them all to the white card base using pop dots. And to give my card that little bit extra and a splash of color, I adhered a teal button among the stamped images.

“Congratulations” card, by Sheri Feypel.

My inspiration for this card was the Wedding dress stamp. I knew that I wanted it to hang on a metal hanger on the front of my card. I stamped the dress twice, once on He Proposed and once on Esther Fleming Floral. I used the second stamped image for accents on the first stamped image, cutting out the scalloped waist and flower. I added a little dimension to the flower with a foam adhesive dot and topped it off with a pearl accent. I added another stamped image, the Diamond ring and attached it with Ivory twine to let it float on the front of the card. I also stamped my sentiment along the bottom of the card directly onto the floral print with a black ink. I love all of the layers on this card!

Altered Gift Bag/Tag, by Sheri Feypel.

I love to personalize gifts, something as simple as adding a scrappy touch to the packaging. It just makes it a bit more personable and thoughtful. I altered a plain white gift bag with papers from the Love and Marriage collection. I cut out the flowers from the Cute Cuts and arranged them with dimension on the front of the bag. I then cut out a small tag and stamped it with stamps from the Love and Marriage Cling Stamps, which stamp wonderfully might I add! I also stamped and cut out the diamond ring and attached it with some Ivory twine so that it appead to be dangling (I used a small foam dot behind it to keep it from being damaged in transit). I love the little extra that the stamps add to my projects and this collection.
