Silhouette was kind enough to sent one of our designers their new heat transfer starter kit to use on a few altered projects, to coincide with their June Promotion.
Heat Transfer Fabric Gift Bags, by Diane Payne.
I was really excited to have an opportunity to try the Silhouette Heat Transfer paper. It is surprisingly easy to use and I'm excited to share my results with you.
I had a few canvas drawstring bags that I had saved from various orders I received and decided to use those for my projects today. I selected 3 different sizes for a little variety and perused my Silhouette Library and came up with 3 different themed images to use.
A Father's Day themed image.
A layered Birthday cake.
And last, flowers for a general greeting.
Let's begin with the flower gift bag. First I imported the image into Silhouette Studio and resized it so all 3 flowers would fit on the bag. In order for the image to appear the way you see it on your screen you need to mirror the image, this is especially important with words to prevent them from appearing backwards on your finished project.
This is how words should look once you mirror the image. The mirror image option is found under the Replicate screen.
Next, I ungrouped the flowers so I could use a different color of heat transfer paper for each one. You can feed the entire sheet of transfer paper into the machine, but I recommend cutting to size and placing it on your cutting mat so you don't have as much waste. For images that I wanted all one color between all 3 projects I placed all of them together and cut them at one time. This also helps minimize waste.
When cutting your image make sure you select the Heat Transfer Material Smooth or Flocked in the cut options and set your blade accordingly.
Once all the images are cut, peel the excess transfer paper off, leaving the portions that will be transferred to your image on the plastic sheet.
Use the hook tool that comes with the Heat Transfer Starter kit to remove small pieces in the image.
Now that I have all my images cut, I'm ready to adhere them to the gift bag.
Place your image where you want it on your project, right side up, and place a towel over the image. Iron it for approximately 45 seconds while applying firm pressure. The flocked images, like this yellow flower, may take a little longer.
Remove the towel, wait a couple seconds and lift the plastic paper. It is that easy! If your image is not adhered, place the towel back on the image and iron again.
Next I placed the remaining two flowers on the gift bag, laid the towel on top and ironed again.
Once all images are adhered and the plastic sheet is removed, place a towel over the entire design and iron to set. Here is the finished project.
Some images come with multiple layers like the Birthday cake. The cool thing is that you can layer your heat transfer paper too!
Before you begin adhering your layers, place them all out on the item you are transferring them to and align the whole image up where you want the finished design.
Remove the top layers, in this case the flowers, and iron as described in the first project. This is what the first layer looks like once ironed on.
Add the top layer, and repeat the ironing process. I especially love that the top layer is flocked and adds a little dimension.
Once I was finished, I had 3 really cute gift bags, all I needed were some tags and they were ready to use!
